NEVER BEFORE SEEN!! Udegaeshi Takedown Variation

In the world of Judo and grappling, it's rare to come across a move that hasn't been seen before. But today, we’re about to break that mold with a completely new variation of the classic Udegaeshi takedown. This technique is unlike anything you've encountered, and it introduces an innovative way to control and off-balance your opponent while setting up a devastating attack.

Understanding the Traditional Udegaeshi

Udegaeshi, known for its use of leverage and control, is typically performed by levering the opponent’s elbow and using an underhook to initiate the throw. Most judokas are familiar with this movement, and it's a staple in high-level competition. The standard application involves breaking the opponent’s posture, getting underneath, and utilizing the elbow as a point of control to execute the technique.

But what if there was a way to take this move to the next level—something that completely disrupts the opponent’s expectations? That’s exactly what we’re introducing today.

The Never-Before-Seen Variation

Step 1: Setting the Trap

Instead of directly attacking the elbow as in a standard Udegaeshi, we start by manipulating our opponent’s posture. Typically, when we control an opponent’s sleeve or collar, they expect a common attack sequence. In this variation, we take a different approach by subtly leading them into a false sense of security.

Once we establish control, we use our chin as a tool to trap their hand. This is the crucial misdirection that makes this variation work.

“Once this elbow comes in losing position, I’m going to put my chin over the hand and make it look like I’m going for a leg grab.”

This positioning forces our opponent to think they’re about to defend against a leg attack, when in reality, something much more unexpected is coming.

Step 2: Misdirection and Execution

By feinting a leg grab, we create a reaction where the opponent instinctively tries to adjust and defend. While their attention is diverted, we maintain control over their hand and arm with our chin, limiting their ability to retract or escape.

As we go underneath, we maintain this hold and secure their sleeve. This is the game-changer—while they believe a traditional takedown or grip battle is occurring, we use the chin trap to completely isolate their arm. Now, when we initiate the Udegaeshi throw, our opponent is caught off guard and unable to defend effectively.

Step 3: Finishing Strong

With their posture broken and their arm trapped, we execute the final movement, flipping them over and landing in a dominant top position. The key here is ensuring that the opponent’s arm remains wedged under our control, making it impossible for them to base out or recover mid-throw.

“The key being here using your chin to control this hand, making it look like you’re going for a leg grab, but you trap the hand for the Ude.”

This seemingly minor detail makes all the difference, adding an entirely new layer of control and effectiveness to an already powerful technique.

Why This Variation is So Effective

  • Complete Misdirection: The opponent expects a leg attack and prepares for it, making them highly vulnerable to the actual throw.

  • Enhanced Control: Trapping the hand with the chin neutralizes defensive reactions, leaving the opponent helpless.

  • High-Pressure Execution: The wrist pressure from this grip adjustment forces the opponent into a compromised position even before the throw happens.

Final Thoughts

This Udegaeshi variation is an absolute game-changer. By combining deception, technical trapping, and precise execution, this technique gives you an edge over even the most seasoned opponents.
