Mastering Level Changes – Attack Low, Throw High in Judo

One of the biggest challenges in Judo is breaking through an opponent’s defense. A skilled opponent will resist, stiff-arm, and drop their hips to avoid being thrown. So, how do you use that reaction against them? By attacking low to set up a high attack.

Feint Low to Open High Attacks

The concept is simple: force your opponent into a reaction by feinting a low attack—like a drop Seoi Nage or ankle pick—and capitalize as they recover. As their body rises back up, their weight is momentarily off-balance, opening them up for big throws like Uchimata or Harai Goshi.

"Drop low, force their reaction, and strike high when they reset—that’s the key to dominating the stand-up game!"

Key Steps to Mastering This Technique:

1️⃣ Initiate the Feint: Show a clear low attack, like a drop Seoi Nage or leg grab, to force your opponent to drop their hips.
2️⃣ Watch for the Recovery: As they reset their posture, they momentarily open up their upper body for attack.
3️⃣ Exploit the Opening: Capitalize instantly with an upper-body throw, using grips and body positioning to drive them over.
4️⃣ Maintain Control: If the first attack doesn’t work, adjust grips and transition smoothly into secondary attacks.

Applying It in Randori & Competition

By training these level-change sequences, you can develop a fluid and deceptive stand-up game. Whether in Judo, BJJ, or MMA, feinting low and attacking high adds another layer to your takedown strategy.
