Look no further than Sanshiro Murao’s “triple threat” attack system—a blueprint for fluid, tactical, and nearly unstoppable offense on the mat. Who Is Sanshiro Murao?

Fresh off his gold medal at Worlds, Murao has become known for his technical precision, anticipation, and ability to dominate “right vs. left” matchups. But there’s more to it than raw athleticism. It’s a system—one built around subtle changes in footwork and an uncanny ability to control the inside leg position.

The Core of Murao’s Triple-Threat System

1. Universal First Step—With Infinite Variations

  • Whether setting up Osoto Gari, Ouchi Gari, or another major attack, Murao’s initial step always “looks the same”—but is adapted each time.

  • Sometimes he takes a bigger, deeper step for Osoto. Sometimes it’s shallower for Ouchi or Ouchi Gari.

  • This masked entry keeps opponents guessing and prevents them from reading his intentions.

2. Distance and Frame Control

  • Murao uses an extended arm and tight frame to keep opponents at bay.

  • Before closing the distance, he manipulates their posture and grips—ensuring he can always target the inside leg.

  • As soon as he controls this frame, he can launch into any of his three main attacks (hence, the “triple threat”).

3. The Finishing Mechanic

  • After entering with his chosen attack, Murao adapts—sometimes cutting back at a 45-degree angle, sometimes running his opponent out of bounds before the throw.

  • He’s been seen chaining moves, switching from Ouchi to Osoto, and exploiting the smallest reactions from his competition (“cut back 45, cut back 45, run them out and throw”).

  • This ability to switch directions and finishes is what makes his attacks so hard to defend—even at the world level.

World-Class Advice—From Shintaro’s IGF Commentary

During the World Championships, Shintaro had the chance to ask Murao directly:
“How do you beat your opponent to the inside leg position every time?”
The answer: It’s all about controlling your distance, mastering the frame, and making every entry look theoretically possible so your opponent never knows which threat is coming until it’s too late.

“This is my spot. I go into the entry one of the three ways. And then there’s the finishing mechanic. Maybe I go to [this], maybe I cut back—45 over this way.” —Shintaro Higashi
