Unique Kata-Guruma from Sleeve-Triceps Grip!
In this session, Shintaro shares a unique variation of kata-guruma, executed from a sleeve-triceps grip. This technique adds an unexpected element to traditional kata-guruma by using a sneaky grip transition that catches opponents off guard.
Setting Up the Attack
Shintaro begins by emphasizing the importance of establishing dominant position before attempting any throw. He demonstrates how to clear the opponent’s hand and achieve a strong right-sided stance.
Shintaro: “I’m such a big believer of fighting for position first. So, we’re going to do right-side dominant position—even a simple kouchi—then take the hand off and go high.”
Once in a strong position, he prepares for the kata-guruma by making a key grip transition—shifting to the triceps and clearing the opponent’s armpit.
Shintaro: “A lot of people wouldn’t really expect the kata-guruma here, so this is the best timing.”

Executing the Kata-Guruma
With control over the triceps and the opponent’s arm across their stomach, Shintaro explains how to initiate the throw:
Bring the opponent’s hand to the opposite hip.
Spin off the front leg while dropping to the knees.
Keep the hip tight to the opponent’s wrist for control.
Elevate and rotate to complete the throw.
Shintaro: “The hip stays tight to the wrist, and now I have good control of the triceps. From here, I can elevate and take my opponent right over.”
Why This Kata-Guruma Works
This version of kata-guruma is highly effective because the grip transition is unexpected, making it difficult for the opponent to defend. By using a sneaky switch to the triceps, Shintaro is able to off-balance his opponent before they realize what’s happening.
Shintaro: “I might go for an osoto-gari or harai-goshi—who knows—but I switch to the triceps real sneaky, bring the hand across the stomach, and hit the kata-guruma right away.”
Final Thoughts
This kata-guruma variation is a powerful addition to any judoka’s arsenal, particularly when executed from a strong dominant grip. Mastering the timing and grip transition will make this technique an effective surprise attack in competition.
