1️⃣ Hand Positioning is Everything

Just like in guard, where you place your hands matters. Controlling grips properly can give you an immediate advantage in a stand-up exchange.

✅ Keep your collar hand higher to maintain control
✅ Prevent your opponent from pulling you down by positioning your grip correctly
✅ Use your grips to frame and create space, just like in guard retention

Think of it as winning the grip fight before the takedown even happens.

2️⃣ Snap Down and Break Posture

A strong posture is everything in Judo and wrestling. If you let your opponent stay upright, they’ll be able to dictate the exchange.

💥 Use snap downs to keep your opponent reacting
💥 Break their posture so they can’t set up their own attack
💥 Control their head position—where the head goes, the body follows

By constantly threatening the snap-down, you keep your opponent uncomfortable and in a defensive position.

3️⃣ Faints & Misdirection

Most BJJ guys don’t feint enough. Make your opponent react before committing to an attack.

🔹 Fake a guard pull to force them into bad positioning
🔹 Use level changes to set up takedowns
🔹 Feint a throw, then go for a snap-down

A well-timed feint forces your opponent to show their reaction, giving you a perfect opportunity to attack.
